My Dearest Mad-Readers,
Today, I would like to discuss the definition of love. If you read the various meanings of love in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, you should soon realize that this small 4-letter word has the potential to mean many many things. A mother and father can feel love for their children, a strong friendship between schoolmates or colleagues may be called love and sexual attraction is also defined as love. As love is a much more confusing concept nowadays, compared to a time when divorcing wasn’t part of getting married, I have decided to share my point of view with you.
Love Is Not Passion
Passion is the first step in a relationship, but I believe it shouldn’t be mixed up with love. Indeed, if the first has an expiration date, the other does not. Passion may be instantaneous, and it is the result of many things, including sexual attraction. Love is built over the years and it shall always succeed where passion shall always fail. This is true for one main reason…
Love Is Not Ephemeral
Whichever person you love, whether it be your sister, your parents, your pet or your partner, does not matter to me. Love remains the same in all cases (without the same benefits, I’ll give you that). You may argue with me that, depending on the type of relationship you have with a person, a strong bond is not called love, but friendship. I would argue against it. Friendship is a type of love which has just as much potential as a relationship between a man and a woman.
Love Is Forgiving
Yes, love is forgiving. Love does not count score. This is one of the main reasons why it is so strong and will always last. I would like to say, though it is only my point of view, that it should be much easier than we make it to forgive nowadays. It should be because we should not be judging others so much. We all are imperfect, yet we still criticize others’ flaws as if we had none. Do you find that acceptable ? I do not. One should be much more forgiving. Not only with a partner. Love ties us all together, right ?
Love Is « Friendship On Fire »
I heard once that love is friendship on fire. That’s how I feel about you.
Adam Forrest – The Perfect Man (2005)
This is a quote I absolutely wanted to share with you. It does contradict (a little) what I was saying above, but it beautifully phrases what a relationship should be : A “super friendship”. Wouldn’t you agree ? Tell me in the comments !
